diy: a super easy way to shorten your pants {and keep the original hem!!}

this weekend i managed to carve 15 minutes out of my super busy schedule.....of laying on the couch :/ ...to shorten my jeans {finally}. it's super easy to do, so here we go.....

step 1: put on your pants and appropriate footwear

i usually wear these pants with flats or flip flops, so barefoot was fine.  if you are going to wear heels, put those on.

step 2: fold 'em up to the desired length

make sure you pin it in place before you take your pants off {hehehe} but be careful not to poke yourself {too many times} in the process.

step 3: measure
measure between your fold edge and the original hem.  then divide by 2.  so my measurement of 4" was divided in half to give me 2".

step 4: remeasure, pin, and stitch
adjust your fold for your new measurement. make sure you measure between your fold edge and the original hem. pin it in place and stitch right next to the original hem. a zipper foot helps.

step 5: turn it right side out and press
if you follow the pink *stitches* on the right side, you can kinda see the seam. press the extra fabric up the leg, and try your pants on. make sure you like the length, because now is the time to re-do if you don't.

step 6: tack or trim
my excess fabric is only 2", so i just hand tacked it up the leg, in the side seams.  if you have even more excess, you can trim it down and zig-zag the raw edge.

step 7: ta da!
boom! you can't even tell ;)

thanks for the warm welcome home, boston!

i had originally written this post on 2/17, but in my haze, had forgotten to actually publish it. be forewarned though, it's full of #firstworldproblems.

last saturday ended in puerto vallarta, with a sunset view of the ocean, and a drink in my hand......

lots of food and fun followed.....

these popped up on my phone every other day, and i laughed.....

8 nights and a mexican snow day* later, it was time to head home.
ugh.
ugh.
ugh.

we touched down at 12:03 monday morning.  the snow didn't look too bad, until we realized everything in our driveway was frozen solid. iced formed around tires, frozen solid. it took over an hour, 2 people pushing, some steel shovel ice chipping, tire squealing and lots of rocking to get greg's truck out. and only one neighbor stuck his head out for a peek. thank goodness his sister's car came out a little easier.

so now its 2:30am and time for bed. except, i'm wound up from all of the adventures in the driveway. i'm fliping and floping in bed, then all of a sudden I. AM. TOTALLY. FREAKED. OUT. PANICKING. AND. CONFUSED. i haven't heard my alarm for over a week. hello 6am. ugh again.

i'm up and getting ready, no problamo. i left my truck at work for the week we were gone, so greg was gonna drop me off on his way in. good plan.

except, his truck was stuck. again. our driveway is narrow. our house, 2 feet, the truck, 2 feet, and the neighbors fence narrow. then a pretty flower box right at the edge of the yard to contend with. not the easiest to get a rear-wheel drive pickup truck out of. especially when the snow melts off of the roof and it refreezes around your tires, again. so more pushing, and rocking, and 2 doormats for traction later, we're off.

i'm exited my truck is still where i parked it and it hasn't been plowed under. or relocated by the silly tow truck guys. after driving around the city all day, its time to free the jeepy. i chip off  the frozen snow/ice, chunk by chunk, like little icebergs. they come off pretty easily, and i narrowly miss almost ripping my wiper off in the process. it starts right up {whoohoo!}, i put the jeepy in 4L and crawl out of the parking lot, next stop grocery store.

i pick up the few necessities to get us through the rest of the week, and by now i am beyond exhausted. sleep deprived doesn't even describe it. i'm just running on caffeine, adrenaline, and prayers. i've only had some popcorn for lunch, and i'm starting to see funny things on my drive home.

the grocery store was out of rock salt, 3 hardware stores later, and i still didn't have any.  so i get home, and pull out the steel garden shovel, put on my boots, and head out to the driveway.  i can see the giant chunks of ice that greg was getting stuck on, and opt for walking across the wet part of the driveway. except it's not dark because its wet, it's black ice. and i'm flat on my back. efffff. at least i didn't land on the shovel or hit my head. but my ass and back sure do hurt.

i chip away for a little while, but can't really tell what progress i've made on the ice-filled mini-sinkholes that make up our driveway. so, a beer and a BLT later, i'm going to bed.

*we ended up with an extra day when a snow storm canceled our flight from chicago to boston late saturday morning, and our flight was rescheduled for the next day :)

hello march 2014

whoops, well hello there....apparently i needed a vacation after my vacation....too much sun and too many fruity rum drinks can kick a girls butt....anyways. i may not have been 100% on last months goals, but here's what i'm working on this month:

> i get home from work relatively early, usually 4:30 or so, then i tell myself i'm just gonna watch a little bit of tv, then work on something til greg gets home....ha, yea right! what really happens is i get sucked into the black-hole of netflix, and it's game over. so, if i just ban tv all together til dinner is done, i stand a much better chance of actually accomplishing something during the week. update: haha, nope, netflix zombie.....

> now that the days are getting a longer, my list of week day running excuses is getting shorter by the day.....3 miles a week should be totally do-able. update: soooo close, if i wasn't so stubborn, i would count the 6 miles spent wandering the city the last saturday....

> i took a calligraphy class in january, and i have all sorts of pen holders, sample letters, nibs and practice sheets, its time to actually use them. fingers crossed though, this is also where my word patience comes in..... :/ and because i can't just set myself the vague goal of *practice calligraphy,* i'm going to shoot for a minimum of 15 minutes a day. you know, like after i get home from work.... update: i don't think i even touched my calligraphy stuff this month, lame.

> oh our dining room/my sewing studio....what a disaster.  i tend to be a bit of a fabric hoarder, to put it politely. i need to decide on a minimum scrap size to keep, get rid of the rest, purge fabric in general, and organize my other bits and baubles. then, while i'm in there, i should hem my jeans.... update: not a whole lot on the fabric front, but things did get tidied, and my jeans did get hemmed.

what are your goals for this month? leave a comment!
